USA Moves to Ban Chinese-Made Humanoid Robots in Government Use – American Security Robotics Act (March 2026)

Breaking: U.S. lawmakers have taken a major step toward restricting Chinese robots.

On March 26, 2026, Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) introduced the American Security Robotics Act — a bipartisan bill that would prohibit federal agencies from purchasing or using humanoid robots and other unmanned ground vehicles made by Chinese companies or other “foreign adversaries.”

This is the first significant legislative effort specifically targeting humanoid robots at the federal level in the United States.

What the Bill Would Do

If passed, the law would:

  • Ban the U.S. federal government from buying or operating humanoid robots produced by companies under the jurisdiction of China or other adversarial nations.
  • Prohibit the use of federal funds for such robots.
  • Include exemptions for certain military, counterterrorism, and intelligence operations (with strict modifications to prevent data transfer back to the manufacturer).

The bill also covers wheeled or tracked unmanned vehicles commonly used by law enforcement and emergency responders.

Why Now?

Lawmakers cite national security concerns, including the risk that Chinese-made robots could:

  • Collect sensitive data and send it back to China
  • Be remotely controlled or compromised by foreign actors
  • Pose long-term threats to U.S. technological leadership in robotics and AI

The move comes as Chinese companies like Unitree are rapidly scaling production and aggressively expanding into global markets.

Implications for the AI & Humanoid Industry

While the ban applies only to federal government procurement, it sends a strong signal:

  • It could influence state and local governments, as well as private companies that work with federal contracts.
  • It may accelerate efforts to develop domestic (U.S. and allied) humanoid robot supply chains.
  • For the broader AI companion and physical AI market, this highlights growing geopolitical tensions that could affect availability, pricing, and trust in Chinese-made robots.

Your Turn

Do you support restricting Chinese-made humanoid robots in government use for national security reasons? Or do you see this as protectionism that could slow global innovation in robotics?
