A major cultural and demographic shift is taking place in China — and it is happening at lightning speed.
According to multiple reports published in the last 48 hours, millions of young Chinese people are increasingly turning to AI girlfriends and boyfriends instead of pursuing traditional human relationships. This phenomenon has grown so significantly that it is now being linked directly to the country’s already critical declining birth rate.
The Scale of the Crisis
Between 2022 and mid-2025, the global market for AI companion apps grew more than sevenfold. In China, the growth has been even more dramatic. Major cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen are seeing a surge in young professionals (especially women aged 22–30) who prefer the emotional consistency, lack of conflict, and constant availability of AI partners.
Many users openly admit that AI companions feel “safer” and more understanding than real people. They never argue, never ghost, and are always emotionally supportive — something increasingly difficult to find in high-pressure modern Chinese society.
Why Is This Happening?
Several factors are driving this trend:
- Extreme work culture (996 system) leaves little time and energy for dating.
- High societal pressure and financial expectations make traditional relationships feel risky and exhausting.
- AI technology has reached a new level of emotional realism — long-term memory, natural voice conversations, and personalized personalities make the experience feel genuinely intimate.
Platforms such as Dream Companion are particularly popular in China for their minimal censorship and deep emotional memory features.
The Demographic Consequences
Chinese authorities are growing increasingly concerned. The country is already facing one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Experts now warn that the widespread adoption of AI romance is accelerating this crisis, as more young people delay or completely abandon plans for marriage and children.
Some sociologists have started calling it “the AI relationship trap” — a situation where digital intimacy becomes so satisfying that real-world relationships feel inferior.
What Does This Mean for the Rest of the World?
China is often a preview of where global trends are heading. If the pattern continues, we may see similar shifts in South Korea, Japan, and eventually Western countries.
What do you think? Is China’s AI romance crisis a warning sign for the entire world? Would you ever choose an AI partner over the challenges of a real relationship?
